PHILOSOPHY as Love of Wisdom
We know the etymology of Philosophy. It is the Love of Wisdom. The word ''Philosophy" is derived from two Greek words- Philos and Sophia- Philos means Love and Sophia means Wisdom.
Wisdom is the first cardinal virtue maintained by Plato. It is regarded as the most sacred quality which is the essence of few. If Philosophy is Love of Wisdom, its nature needs to be explained as Love, though appears to be simple, is a multi-dimentional concept.
On the one hand, Love can be viewed as Force. It is the driving force through which actions of various types spring. In other words, it spurs actions. It tends to give rise to acts such as preaching, teaching, delivering sermons/ lectures/ writing/ presenting thoughts through art. It is a compelling force which motivates/ inspires various types of actions.
Moreover, Love may be viewed as nothing but Sacrifice, Total Dedication, Pure Devotion and Surrender. We know innumerable lives like Socrates who, without compromises, have embraced death for upholding principles maintained throughtout life.
Lastly, Love of Wisdom can also imply attraction for definite qualities. e. g. Rationality. Wisdom may be conceived as extraordinary ability for Logical thinking, Critical consideration, Analysis, Synthesis. We know Philosophy provides food for thought to all of these faculties.
